We skated downtown to Confederation Park this morning, primarily to join in and see some of the Winterlude festivities that started just yesterday. From our house the length of the Rideau Canal to the city center is just over 4kms. The weather was absolutely amazing. At about the 2km mark I even had to take my coat and gloves off, because I was so hot.
There's a huge program of places to go and things to see and do during the Winterlude Festival. This weekend we decided to check out the Chinese New Year celebrations, including dance performances, a traditional tea ceremony in an Asian yurt, original sounds created with Asian gongs and crystal bowls, a garden of lanterns, ice sculptures and a whole lot more!
Lilah calls Saturday and Sunday "Family Day". And what a fabulous family day we had together!

the joy of love: [ then and now ]
Today is the first day of the Chinese new year. Xīn Nián Kuài Lè!
According to Lilah, it's "Happy Chinese New Year"! That's what she calls it and I love that! I overheard her chatting with her imaginary friends this morning: "It's happy Chinese new year today. Oh, is it happy Chinese new year? I like happy Chinese new year! Me too, happy Chinese new year is so much fun!" And it went on and on and on.
The photo challenge (with 'the joy of love') for today is 'then and now'. I wasn't planning on joining in today, because I had a lot on, but then I realized I already had pictures taken that I could use! As I mentioned before, it's the first day of the (Chinese) New Year and this is our third year celebrating with Lilah. There's something very special and nostalgic about looking through past years pictures. Sigh.

the joy of love: [ how they look ]
Todays photo assignment with 'the joy of love' is about 'how they look'.
I am a biased Mama - always have been, always will be! That's how it works though, when you love someone with all your heart. Lilah always looks beautiful, every single day. I absolutely adore her and all her precious little looks. I look at her and think to myself, her birth Mama must be beautiful. Really. Truly. Beautiful.
Lilah has had 'the frames look' for a while now. A friend of ours from Church gave her these 3D kid size glasses, we popped out the lens and well, she thinks she's the bee's knees wearing them. Who am I to argue? And the pigtails, we call them bear ears, they are my absolute favourite look on her at the moment. Lilah loves them too, she asks for them a lot and then says: "Call me Bear. You're Franklin and I'm Bear. Okay Franklin?"
Have I mentioned I adore her?
I've also been trying to follow the photography tips that have been sent in the emails. Today's tip was about photographing your subject on the same level as they are. I rarely photograph at this level, but it sure is fun!

the joy of love: [ what they do ]
So I'm doing a little project this month, maybe not every single day, but I'm going to tag along as much as possible! It's called 'the joy of love' and it runs for the month of February. An email is sent out daily with the photo assignment of the day, along with photography tips! And it's FREE! Go here to join in.
Today's challenge is 'what they do'. When I saw the email this morning, I had something in mind. And then, as we were sitting eating breakfast - my first and Lilah's second! - I grabbed my camera, because the lighting was great and to be honest, eating is one of our favourite things to do. In fact, it's 'what we do' best! We're a very-passionate-about-eating family!
Lilah was totally loving her pork and black pepper pâté on toast, and grapes - I love pâté on toast and it wasn't too many days after we brought Lilah home from China that she fell in love with it too!
Oh, and she is never without her frames these days!

project 365 ~ month of january ~ 246-276/365
Here are my contributions to the ninth month of Project 365.
You know, I'm really starting to enjoy this Project 365. I was looking through all my past photos today and just about every photo I've taken has a memory that goes along with it. They remind me of that particular day or event, sometimes I can even imagine being there - it is amazing! And even more wonderful for someone like me, who is rather forgetful, in my young age! Heh!
I was surprised at how bright this months pictures are. I imagined the winter would be dark and dismal, but throw a lot of ice and snow in there and I guess it goes without saying that they're sure to be bright! The winter photography is definitely proving to be easier than I originally anticipated.
I added a label to the bottom of all my 365 posts, called '365'. If you click on that label, it'll show all my previous posts for Project 365.

sixteen?
If I've ever wondered what sixteen will look like, well here it is!
Minus the glasses, maybe. It depends if she actually needs them or if she just wears some fake ones, like she is here. She told Baba today, "This is what I'll look like when I'm sixteen". And he said, "But you'll always be my baby girl". I actually think she scoffed at him!
Now all she needs is the saying: 'whatev-ah!' - which is a very teenage thing to say, from what I hear. What a scary thought!

the year of the rabbit
Chinese New Year is on February 3rd this year. Wow, that's just 9 days away!
Yesterday morning I was telling Lilah that the Chinese Zodiac Animal for 2011 is the rabbit. And then I made a suggestion: "Wouldn't it be nice to wear your bunny ears and I'll paint you a pink nose and whiskers? Listen, I did not have to repeat or beg. She was SO excited! Don't think I've ever pulled a 'photoshoot' off as well as that before! So I slipped her into her pink qípáo, same one as she wore to the reception at the Chinese Embassy in September. Might I add, the dress is a size 4 and is creeping up her legs like crazy, now if I washed it I would totally blame myself, but I didn't!
And then while I was taking her picture, I gave her 'The Velveteen Rabbit' book off the shelf and it was a seriously big hit for her. And by doing that, I got some of my favourite shots.
